New 40 & 401 Routes, Meeting Dec. 19.
-

Bus stopped at location of Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market on Coleman Blvd. Please note that actual bus stops are on Coleman Blvd. East and West of this location.
CARTA staff is in the process or recommending a slightly modified route for the #40 after the end of the current road work and a very different route for the #401 East Cooper Connector, which would run between the Visitor’s Center in Downtown Charleston to the East Cooper Connector. Service to Whipple Road, Long Point, Bell Hall and Snowden would end. Regular #402 Island Flex Bus service on the Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island might end as well.
Four options are being considered, the CARTA board has indicated a preference for Option 3.
- You can read the CARTA consultant’s report on the four options.
- William Hamilton has prepared detailed recommendations for option 3 regarding the 40 and 401. You can comment on Google Docs and your comments will be delivered to the board.
- Straphanger recommendations on Bus Stops: Stop Plan for Ravenel Gateway District and the Johnnie Dodds Blvd. Stop improvement priorities.
Unfortunately due to communication problems, November’s public hearing wasn’t well attended. We only learned of it the day after it took place. This board meeting will probably be our last opportunity to present any input on these new routes, or the possibility of seasonal beach service.
The next CARTA Board meeting will be December 19 at 2 pm on the Second Floor of the Lonnie Hamilton County Services Building on 4045 Bridgrview Drive in North Charleston. We plan to be present to present our thoughts during the public comment period. If you want any input on the future of transit East of the Cooper, please plan to attend. Images and maps of the areas and locations of concern greatly assist the board and staff when we present input. We have a Facebook event signup online for this meeting.
